He must have at least one card in the same suit as the called Sow. After the play of the hand, during or after the payout, either side offense or Wiesbadener Volksbank Bank can demand payment for their side holding in their combined hands as originally dealt at least the top 3 Trumps or at least the top 2 in a Wenz Solo. If none of the players can declare at Schafkopf Rules five trumps, the player with the Jack of Clubs Unter of Acorns must take the lead; if he loses, it only counts as single i. Before the game begins, the first dealer is determined, usually by drawing the highest card from the deck. Hearts Neue Wimmelspiele just a normal Live Tipico. If a player does not have the led suit, he can either trump or discard a suit card of his choice no Trumpfzwang. Winning them can be very profitable!

Suit Solo Tout. Same as Suit Solo, but contracting to win every trick! Holding the top eight Trumps. Lay them out, then frame them and get a new deck!

This is an old Bavarian tradition. The framed cards are hung on the wall of the bar or home where the game was played. The deck is immediately retired!

The Ace Game If only one player bids and wishes to play an Ace game the most common contract there are some requirements that his hand must meet, and some rules governing the play of the hand that both he and his partner need to be aware of.

He is going to need to be able to call a plain non-trump suit of which he holds at least 1 card, but not the ace. If he cannot meet these requirements, then he cannot play an Ace game!

He should not bid unless he has a strong enough hand to play one of the Solo games. Upon the declarer calling a suit, the person holding the Ace in that suit becomes the declarers partner for that hand, but must not give any indication in word or gesture of his status.

Nor should those who do not hold the ace make any such announcements. The partner status will naturally be revealed through the play of the cards.

The called Ace cannot be thrown off on a trick! The first time someone leads the called suit, the partner must play the Ace, even if he has other cards in that suit to choose from!

If the holder of the ace wishes to lead the called suit, he must do so with the ace, UNLESS he has 3 or more cards of the suit besides the ace, in which case he can lead a lower card.

After the suit has been played in this way, the Ace is now free to be thrown off or played as desired. If the called suit is never led, then the Ace can only be played on the final trick.

If the declarer or his partner, if applicable still feels certain of a win, they may redouble the contract.

This, of course, is up to you, but should be agreed upon before playing starts. Notice that the doubling and redoubling of an Ace game will result in players learning the identity of at least one of the defense players, and if the game is redoubled by the partner, then he is also revealed in the process.

After the doubling round is over, the rest of the players, in turn, each play a card to the trick, observing the following rules:.

He does not have to play a trump card unless of course, a trump card was led. Once everyone has played to the trick, the person who played the highest trump card, or if no trump card was played, the highest card of the suit that was led, wins the trick and removes it from the center of the table, placing it face down in front of him.

Play continues in this fashion until all the cards have been played. Counting the Hand and the Payout After the last trick has been played the declarer counts the points in his trick pile and receives or pays out on paper or with chips, dimes, etc.

If Declarer Has Won. Receive Base. Points or More. Win Schneider. All Tricks. Win Schwarz. Pay Base. Points or Less. Lose Schneider.

No Tricks. Lose Schwarz. If the hand has been do ubled or redoubled, then double or redouble the above payouts accordin gly.

Note that in a Solo cont ract the declarer will pay all 3 opponents, or get paid by all 3 opponents. In an Ace game, declar er and partner will each pay a different opponen t or get paid by different opponents.

After the payout has been made the cards are shuffled and dealt by the next dealer, and play continues as before. There is no set way of ending a game of Schafkopf.

Basically, you can set a stop-time, or simply call it quits when everyone is too tired to continue.

Some variations :. Ramsch In case of an all-pass situation, rather than throwing in the deal, you may want to play a Ramsch hand, where the object is to take the least amount of points possible.

It is played with Hearts as the Trump suit, but everyone plays for himself. The person winning the most points pays the other three players 2 units each.

If two players tie for most points, then the player who took the most tricks is the loser, if still equal, the player with the most Trump cards, and if still equal, the player having the highest Trump card.

Pot Another common way to handle an all-pass situation is for everyone to put 1 unit into a pot, and this pot will be won by the the next declarer to win an Ace game not the partner.

This is in addition to the regular payout. If the team loses, then the declare alone must double the pot. After the play of the hand, during or after the payout, either side offense or defense can demand payment for their side holding in their combined hands as originally dealt at least the top 3 Trumps or at least the top 2 in a Wenz Solo.

These are referred to as Matadors. The payout is 1 unit for each Matador in the run until the succession is broken. This bonus must be demanded, so if you are playing with this option, be sure to pay attention, since the opposition is not going to volunteer payment!

Also, most play that this bonus is subject to doubling. Most now play that if the losing team held the top Trumps, then they pay the winning team, in which case the losing team would definitely not voluntarily admit to having them!

However, if the next cut of the cards happens before the matador payment is demanded, then it is too late! Additional Contracts Some play with one or two additional available contracts.

Some play with many more! You can learn more about these by searching online or from the highly recommended book by David Parlett listed below.

The basic and most common contract in Bavarian Schafkopf is one in which the bidder calls an ace, whose holder becomes his partner.

The aces in the Bavarian pack are known as Säue - sows - hence the name of the site. From Uwe Rasche's page you can obtain his Schafkopf program, which can also play American Sheepshead.

Schafkopfpalast is a cross-platform multiplayer Schafkopf app which allows users of Android, iOS and Facebook to play together.

The website is in German but a complete English language version is available. Isar Interactive publishes a Schafkopf app for Apple and Android devices.

Here is an archive copy of the Schafkopf-Links page, which had numerous links to useful Schafkopf sites and information. In the nineteenth century Schafkopf was taken to the USA by German emigrants, where it became Sheepshead , several versions of which are still popular in Wisconsin and other states with a significant population of German descent.

Schafkopf, like most German games, is normally played clockwise, but Tanno Gerritsen reports that they play counter-clockwise in the village of Aichstetten, in the Württemberg part of the Allgäu, and maybe in other part of that region as well.

The hierarchy of the cards and their sequence within the trumps are similar to those in Bavarian Schafkopf and Skat.

However, in German Schafkopf the 10 ranks between the Queen or Ober and 9, in all suits even though it is worth ten points.

The remaining trumps are specified by the player who is the declarer by naming the trump suit at the outset. The cards of the trump suit then follow in the aforementioned sequence see above.

German Schafkopf is a partnership card game, but unlike Bavarian Schafkopf or Doppelkopf partners are not announced during the course of the game, but are permanent as in Bridge : the players facing one another are automatically partners.

The seating order is determined by the drawing of playing cards before the game begins: the players who have picked the two highest cards are partners and sit opposite one another.

In another variation, the players with the two black queens or Ober of Acorns and Ober of Leaves form a partnership see below.

After the cards have been shuffled and cut , each player is dealt a total of eight playing cards in two sets of four in clockwise fashion.

After the deal, starting clockwise each player announces the maximum possible number of trumps in their hand by adding the jacks and the longest suit "I declare x trumps".

The player with the highest number of possible trumps takes the lead in the game and names the trump suit. If two players announce the same number of possible trumps, then the one with the higher number of trump points wins "I declare x trumps with y points" ; if this number is also the same, the higher trump wins usually the higher jack.

If none of the players can declare at least five trumps, the player with the Jack of Clubs Unter of Acorns must take the lead; if he loses, it only counts as single i.

Here, a solo player plays against the other three players. For each game point won, the winner draws a line on a sheet of paper.

The game is won by the first player to complete draw nine dashes in the shape of a sheep's head, the Schafkopf : four dashes arranged in a rectangle form the shape of the head, two dashes form the eyes, two more the horns and a single dash in the middle represents the nose.

The game described is the earliest form of German Schafkopf. Apart from Bavarian Schafkopf and the other early variants mentioned above, further variants have been developed, some in different regions.

These include:. In an East German book of game rules [6] there are the following variations of German Schafkopf which appear to reflect, in part, von Alversleben's variants:.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. German Schafkopf The top trumps in the original Schafkopf game. Main article: Schafkopf. Doppelkopf Schafkopf.

Niedernhausen: Falken , p. Trick-taking card games list. Categories : Schafkopf group German deck card games French deck card games Four-player card games.

A trick without trumps is won by the highest card of the suit that was led. In each hand there are two teams: the declarer's team and the opponents.

The declarer is the player who chose the game - the declarer may play alone but in Asserufen will usually have a partner. The opponents' team consists of the other two or three players.

The declarer's side wins if they take at least 61 card points in their tricks, in other words more than half of the card points in the pack.

The opponents' team need only 60 or more points to win. A team that has less than 30 points in their tricks is Schneider , and this increases the score for the winners.

Skat players should note that in Palatinate Schafkopf games a team that has exactly 30 points is out of Schneider. A team requires at least 91 points to win with Schneider.

A team that takes no tricks at all loses with Schwarz , which further increases the score for the winners. If one team has the top three trumps Queens of clubs, spades and hearts at the start of the play, they are said to be " hoch " high , and this increases the score for the game, whether won or lost.

In this case the score is increased by 1 unit for the each top trump in sequence held by the same team.

For example if one team's highest trump is the Jack of spades, the other team is "5 mal hoch" 5 times high and the game score is increased by 5 units.

The principle is similar to Skat scoring except that in Palatinate Schafkopf top trumps only count when a team is with or without at least 3. An opponent of the declarer can double the score for the game by saying kontra also known as spritzen at any time until they play their card to the first trick.

In case of a kontra the declarer or declarer's partner in Asserufen can redouble the score by saying rekontra gegenspritzen.

The teams can continue to double alternately and in principle this can continue indefinitely though in practice the process rarely goes beyond rekontra.

The play is paused until players have finished doubling and redoubling. Players are allowed to double or redouble even if they passed the opportunity to bid a contract themselves.

The dealer shuffles, passes the cards to the player to the right to be cut, and then deals each player a hand of 10 cards face down, and two cards the skat face down to the centre of the table.

First a packet of 3 cards is dealt to each player, then the 2 cards to the skat, then 4 to each player and finally 3 to each player.

The players pick up their hands and look at them. In each deal one player, the declarer, plays a contract against a team consisting of the other two players, the opponents.

The possible contracts, in ascending order of priority, are as follows. Note: The use of " Du " to describe a contract in which the declarer must win every trick is derived from the French " tout " meaning "all".

After the cards have been dealt the players bid for the right to be declarer. The player to dealer's left speaks first, followed by the others in clockwise order.

In the first round, the players say whether or not they wish to play a Solo of any kind. The the type of Solo and the proposed trump suit are not mentioned when bidding, but in the rare case where two players want to play Solo, a Heart Solo outranks an ordinary Solo and a Solo Du outranks both.

If all pass in the first round of bidding, no one wishing to play a Solo, there is a second round in which players say in turn, beginning with the player to dealer's left, whether they wish to play Simple Game.

No trump suit is mentioned when bidding and in contrast to Solo, a Simple Game with hearts as trumps does not have priority.

Trumps are not chosen until after the declarer has seen the skat. As soon as someone bids a Simple Game, the bidding ends with the bidder as declarer, the bidder picks up the skat, discards two cards and names trumps.

If all pass in the second round, no player wishing to play even a Simple Game, the cards are thrown in, there is no score, and the next dealer shuffles and deals.

After the declarer has named trumps, the opponents can offer to surrender Schenken. The declarer can accept the surrender to win the game without play, but thereby forgoes the chance to win with Schneider or Schwarz.

Alternatively the declarer can refuse the surrender and insist on playing the cards, but this is an undertaking to make the opponents Schneider.

If the opponents take 30 points or more in tricks, the declarer loses the game. Schafkopf is normally played for small stakes, for example 10 cents per game point stakes of 20 or 50 cents per point are also common.

Game points are scored as follows:. Example: Solo Du in hearts with four Queens and both black Jacks but the heart Jack held by an opponent would be scored as follows: game 1, hearts 2, Schneider 3, Schwarz 4, Solo 5, 6 top trumps 11, doubled for Du So playing for 10 cents per point the declarer would win 2.

Theoretically the maximum scores for top trumps are 'with 12' when the declarer has 10 trumps, there are 2 trumps in the skat, and only the 7 and 8 are with the opponents, or 'without 14' if there are no trumps at all in the declarer's hand or in the skat.

Below we will describe Asserufen, a version of Schafkopf for four active players. However, the three-player game described above can also accommodate a fourth player at the table.

In this case the players take turns to deal cards to the other three players, taking no part in the bidding and play. The non-playing dealer scores as a member of the opponents' team who pays if the declarer wins and is paid if the declarer loses.

The dealer shuffles, the player to dealer's left cuts, and the dealer deals out all the cards face-down to the players in packets of 4, so that each player has a hand of 8 cards.

There is no skat. The players speak in turn, in clockwise order, beginning with Vorhand, the player to dealer's left.

A player who does not want to be declarer passes by saying " weg " away and takes no further part in the bidding. If no one has yet bid a contract, a player who wants to be declarer in the basic contract Assrufen: hearts trumps, call an Ace says " ich hänge an " I hang on.

If a previous player has bid " ich hänge an " and no one else has bid, a second player may offer to take over the basic contract by saying " darf man?

If there are no other bids the first bidder may either refuse the offer and call an Ace, or accept the offer and allow the second bidder to be declarer.

There is a restriction on hanging off: players may only say " darf man? A player who either holds the Ace or is void of all three suits other than hearts is not allowed to make the offer.

The idea behind hanging off is that the first bidder will accept the offer if holding at least one and ideally more than one Ace, and the second bidder will then hope to call an Ace held by the first bidder so that these two players with relatively strong hands can play as partners.

The second bidder will typically have a hand with good trumps but lacking Aces: holding Aces the player would usually not attempt to take over as declarer but just wait to be called as a partner by the first bidder.

A player who wants to play a Solo of any kind names the contract but not the trump suit at their turn to bid. The declarer calls the Ace of a non-trump suit, i.

This must be an Ace that the declarer does not hold, and if possible it must be the Ace of a suit in which the declarer has at least one card.

Whoever has the called Ace is the declarer's partner. Note that if the declarer is the second bidder hanging off , the declarer will always holds a card of the called suit, since a player is not allowed to hang off unless they have such a suit.

If the declarer is the first bidder hanging on it is possible that they have the Aces of all their non-trump suits. In this case it is legal to call a suit in which the declarer has no cards at all.

If the declarer holds all three non-trump Aces, and only then, it is legal to call a Ten that the declarer does not hold, and in this case the holder of the called Ten becomes the declarer's partner.

Note that in this game it is not legal to play a "secret Solo" by calling a card in the declarer's own hand so as to play alone.

The holder of the called card plays for the declarer's team but must not say or do anything to reveal that they are the partner other than through the normal course of play.

The partnerships will of course become known when the called Ace is played, or if the partner replies with a rekontra to an opponent's kontra.
